The Filament We Use. What It’s Made Of, How It’s Produced & How Eco-Friendly It Really Is
At 3D Print Corner, we carefully choose the materials we use for our 3D-printed products. Whether it’s fidgets, sensory tools, decor pieces, or accessories, the quality and sustainability of our filament matter.
Here’s everything you should know about the material behind our prints.

What Is Our Filament Made Of?
We primarily use PLA filament (Polylactic Acid).
PLA is a bioplastic made from renewable resources such as:
- Corn starch
- Sugarcane
- Cassava roots
- Other plant-based biomass

Unlike traditional plastics made from petroleum, PLA is derived from natural plant sugars that are fermented and processed into polymer resin.
That means: 🌱 it starts from plants — not oil.

How Is PLA Filament Produced?
The production process looks like this:
1. Plant harvesting. Corn or sugarcane is grown and harvested.
2. Fermentation. The plant sugars are fermented into lactic acid.
3. Polymerization. Lactic acid is chemically processed into PLA resin.
4. Extrusion. The resin is melted and extruded into thin strands.
5. Spooling. The filament is cooled, measured precisely (usually 1.75 mm), and wound onto spools.
The result: A high-precision material that works perfectly in modern 3D printers.

How Ecological Is PLA Really?
PLA is considered one of the most eco-friendly 3D printing materials available, but let’s be transparent about what that means.
Renewable resource
PLA is made from plants, not fossil fuels.
Lower carbon footprint
Its production typically generates fewer greenhouse gas emissions compared to petroleum-based plastics.
Industrially compostable
Under industrial composting conditions (high heat + controlled humidity), PLA can break down.
Important:
PLA does not easily decompose in normal home compost or in nature. Proper waste management is still important.
For long-lasting products like fidgets or decor items, durability actually reduces waste, because items are used for years instead of being disposable.

What Can PLA Be Used For?
PLA is extremely versatile and perfect for:
- Sensory fidgets & ADHD tools
- Decorative objects
- Custom figures
- Accessories
- Educational models
- Prototypes
- Creative art pieces
It offers beautiful surface quality, vibrant colors, and precise details, ideal for aesthetic and tactile products.

Final Thoughts
Every 3D-printed item starts with a filament spool, but behind that spool is a material science story.
By using plant-based PLA, we aim to produce high-quality, durable products while keeping our environmental footprint as responsible as possible.
